This is my spin on Marty Robbins’ 1963 hit “Begging to You.”

If he only recorded one song in his entire life, Marty’s original studio recording of this tune would earn him a spot among the greatest voices of all time. Seriously, listen to it 20 times.

I rediscovered “Begging to You” a few weeks back when I was wading through the awful 1967 film “Road to Nashville,” which features many of the greats from that time, including Connie Smith, Lefty Frizzell, Faron Young, and Kitty Wells. I had to endure a lot of footage of Marty doing laps in his race car and hapless dialogue between pretend producers. But I was rewarded with (and completely unprepared for) a scene where Marty takes a small guitar, sits on a dark bench, and delivers “Begging to You.”

If you ignored my invitation to listen to the original recording, then at least watch the scene from the movie.

These sparse, blue country songs kill me. Everything stops and I become Jello-O.

The song hasn’t left my head in the weeks since. So I threw myself into it today. I can’t do what Marty does. But it felt good to flail in that direction.

Thanks for listening. ❤️
