I’m really sticking my neck out on the song I recorded today: A steel-guitar-heavy Ray Price shuffle called “I’m Walkin’ Slow.”

I shelved this one for a few weeks because my steel guitar chops weren’t up to snuff. I re-visited it today with the idea that I’d just double up the guitar parts and play very little steel. But, in the end, it just doesn’t sound right to me without it. So you’ll have to tolerate my novice steel noodling.

That’s thanks in large part to my love for an astounding studio recording of this tune by The Country Side of Harmonica Sam, who I copped copious licks from.

What makes this song special to me, though, are Ray Price’s driving vocal harmonies captured on his 1962 record. To my ears, there is no single melody. Every time I listen to the song, I have to choose which vocal part I’m going to tune my ears to. And then I listen again, and focus on a different part. It’s sensational singing.

So I had fun taking a crack at it.

This recording leans heavily on my Sho-Bud Maverick pedal steel, a blackguard Telecaster that Deke Dickerson Frankenstein’d, and a ’54 Fender Pro.

Thanks for listening ❤️
